This website belongs to a small family plant nursery. We try to collect as little information about you as possible. This page explains what we do collect, why, and what your rights are.
Who we are
shadyplants.com is run by Tony and Sylvia Marden, trading as shadyplants.com. We decide how and why your personal information is used (we are the "controller").

What we collect, and why
If you use the contact form or email us
The form asks for your name, email address, a subject and a message. We use them only to read and reply to your enquiry. The form does not store your message on the website: it is sent as an email to our inbox, so it is kept with our other email and handled in the same way.
Why we may do this: you asked us a question, and answering it is in our legitimate interests and yours. We do not use your details for marketing, and we do not add you to any list.
If you telephone or visit
If you ring to make an appointment, we may note your name and number to arrange the visit. Visits to the nursery are by appointment only.
When you simply browse the site
The site does not use analytics, advertising or tracking, and it does not set cookies of its own. Like any website, the company that delivers it to you (see "Who handles your information" below) sees your IP address and basic technical details in order to send you the pages.
The map
The map near the foot of the home page starts as a picture hosted on this site, so nothing is sent to Google when the page loads. If you click it to load the interactive map, Google Maps loads, and Google may set cookies and receive information about your visit under Google's privacy policy and cookie information. You do not need to load it: the "Open in Google Maps" and "Get directions" links simply take you to Google Maps in a new tab. The map picture uses data from OpenStreetMap contributors.
Who handles your information
- Amazon Web Services hosts the website and sends the contact form message to our inbox (servers in the UK and Europe).
- Google Workspace provides our email, where enquiries are received and kept.
- Google Maps only if you choose to load the interactive map.
- Facebook only if you follow the link to our Facebook page, which opens in a new tab; its own policy then applies.
We do not sell your information or share it for marketing.
How long we keep it
We keep emails and enquiries for as long as we need them to deal with your question and for a reasonable time afterwards, then we delete them. You can ask us to delete yours sooner at any time.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you and give you a copy;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete your information;
- stop using it for a particular purpose, or object to how we use it.
Contact us using the details above. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint, telephone 0303 123 1113.
Changes
If we change how this website works, we will update this page and the date at the top.
